How much Fish Oil should I take?

Our general recommendations are to aim for around 2 to 4 grams of EPA/DHA per day.  However, if you eat lots of wild-caught salmon, grass-fed beef and other natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids, and generally avoid sources of omega-6 (like vegetable oils, factory-farmed meat, nuts and seeds), you may not need any fish oil supplementation at all.  Check the label of you fish oil to see what level of EPA and DHA is contained in each tablet.  Then make sure that your daily total adds up to a minimum of 2 grams and maximum of 4 grams per day.  You can divide these through your day if necessary, 3 pills in the morning and 3 at night.  Whatever is convenient for you.

Remember not all fish oils are the same.  Some have higher levels of EPA and DHA in each tablet.  So the cheap fish oil might mean you have to take eight pills a day to reach the recommended levels.  It is better to take a hight quality fish oil.
